Nick Cave and Susie Bick demonstrate how to do Gothic power couple dressing

Across a career of almost 40 years (and counting), Australian artist Nick Cave has solidified himself as one of the most prolific rock musicians in history. Pulling influence from all kinds of genres, including blues, folk, garage, gothic – even gospel – his sound is dark, enlightening and incredibly distinct. The same can be said for his wardrobe.

Cave's music initially developed through the 1980s and 1990s – decades when fashion transitioned from glamour and extravagance to athleisure – but he was never really one to follow a zeitgeist. He turned to timelessness instead, inhabiting a very specific uniform of sharp, single-breasted suits (more often than not in black), huge-collared shirts (always a little unbuttoned) and leather loafers.

His wife, Susie Bick, is also very assured in her style. As founder of womenswear brand The Vampire's Wife (the name of which was plucked from one of Cave's abandoned book projects), her designs reflect excellent taste: hyper-feminine with serious structure and gothic overtones. Add her husband's wardrobe to the mix and you have a match made in couple-dressing heaven. Which therefore means an outpouring of style lessons for us.

Today, Nick Cave celebrates his 63rd birthday, so we're joining in the celebrations with six of their most stylish moments together. Perfectly textured, impeccably tailored and always romantic, this is the ultimate couple for inspiration.

1. Step up your monochrome game, stat

When: 17 February 2020

Why it works: The first thing to know about Nick Cave and Susie Bick: their wardrobes involve a lot of black garments. Some might say it's an easy colour to choose, but in fact there's an art to pulling it off with serious style and this couple is definitely aware it. The key is to make it look romantic through textures, structure and accessories: shown perfectly in the above ensembles. Stunning puffed sleeves, polka-dot gloves and an embellished tote for Bick worked perfectly alongside Cave's famous exaggerated collar and croc-leather Gucci loafers. Pure style.

2. You need some satin in your wardrobes

When: 21 July 2011

Why it works: This pair receives a perfect score in the couple dressing game from us for one simple reason: they each have a uniform (both of which work brilliantly together) and they stick to it. For Cave, it's a collection of slim-cut, single-breasted suits with open-collared shirts and aviator sunglasses. For Bick, it's a refined theme of gothic elegance, which lends itself to floor-length gowns and satin shirt dresses. As shown here, the latter works perfectly next to the texture of Cave's striped suit. Casual dressing done right.
