The warmer seasons are upon us and, naturally, that calls for a shift to the lighter half of our wardrobes. One quick look across the Spring/Summer 2020 trends confirms the following new rules: satin can be worn to the extreme (seriously, we’re talking head-to-toe tailoring à la Dior), shorts are looking shorter than ever and bowling shirts are out in force.
Of course, the runway is our first point of call for lessons each year, but it’s not the only place from which to take a style cue. Designers, after all, are often influenced by broader culture, from art to music to film. Given our country is now accustomed to lockdown, it’s highly likely you’ve been watching more films than ever, so why not take some fashion lessons from them at the same time?
With settings (and respective outfits) from the Italian coastline to Brooklyn’s hippest streets, here are ten of our favourite summer films to kick-start to your summer wardrobe.
1. The Talented Mr Ripley (1999)
Style tip to take: Jazz clubs, summer cocktails and a romantic setting of the Italian coastline: we’re craving every detail of Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr Ripley right now. Most of all, the clothing, thanks to Dickie Greenleaf and his penchant for summer knitwear. Throughout the film he models a superb collection of jazz-inspired tops, always elegant in colour combinations and finished with the sharpest collars known to man. Source one similar (Scott Fraser Collection has crafted the best) and wear it over some high-waisted linen shorts for full Greenleaf effect.
2. Dazed And Confused (1993)
Style tip to take: Richard Linklater's classic cult film Dazed And Confused may have been released in the early 1990s, but it was set smack dab in the middle of fashion's most flamboyant decade: the 1970s. Naturally, therefore, each of the leading male characters looks flawless – dressed in bright, flared jeans, buckled leather belts, graphic T-shirts and the most impressive selection of shirts we've seen on screen. Source one similar to those pictured above (we're particularly into the purple printed design worn by Randall) for an instant uplift in your summer wardrobe. And FYI: make sure to tuck it into your jeans.
