Tony Vaccaro: From Shadow to Light is the 95-year-old photographer’s first exhibition in the UK in more than 50 years. Taking place at The Getty Images Gallery in Fitzrovia, the exhibition encapsulates everything from D-Day to fashion icons, in a wonderful exploration of his career, which spans nearly eight decades. Many of these images have never been seen before, and are only now being discovered, shown and sold as part of this exhibition.
American Vaccaro’s career began as a war photographer, secretly taking 8,000 photographs on the front line in the Second World War, having smuggled a camera with him when sent to Europe. During this time, he captured soldiers in combat before developing his film in his helmet, and even photographed the D-Day landings.
He then went on to make a name for himself in the fashion industry, capturing celebrities for high profile magazines including LIFE, Harper’s Bazaar and Newsweek.
Running until 27 October.
