Classic car junkies are flocking to Washington, D.C., in hopes of seeing the 1968 Ford Mustang GT made famous by the Warner Bros. cult film "Bullitt."
The famous Mustang will be displayed through April 23 on the National Mall in a glass garage lit up at night as part of the Historic Vehicle Association’s month-long Cars at the Capital celebration.
The car's owner, Sean Kiernan, said the vehicle has been in his family since his father purchased it in 1974. Kiernan told FOX 5's Kevin McCarthy that McQueen reached out to his father in 1977 in hopes of buying it from him but his father said no. “At that time he had had it for three years, put plenty of miles on it, it was their family car -- I think that anybody in the same situation would say no," Kiernan said.
The car has retained several of the modifications that were made for its time on the big screen. There is a hole in the truck where a smoke machine was fitted and there are several camera mounts still welded along the bottom. A duplicate Mustang, used by stunt drivers for the jumping scenes in the film, surfaced in 2017.
The display runs from April 17 (which is also National Mustang Day!) through April 23.
