A brief fashion history of the Breton top

A story of reinvention, the marinière has gone from fisherman’s jersey to naval uniform to Riviera chic attire (courtesy of Coco Chanel) to a celluloid star in the French New Wave (think Jean Seberg, Brigitte Bardot and Jeanne Moreau). And today? It’s still in the wardrobes of stylish dressers everywhere.

Breezing through sailors on old waves to the nonchalant New Wave of the 1960s, the Breton went from sturdy 19th-century seafaring wear to an item of celluloid chic – epitomised by Brigitte Bardot in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1963 film Contempt.
