A Brief History of Wes Anderson’s Many Fashion-World Collaborations

There are few film directors who are as beloved by the fashion community as Wes Anderson. The reason is simple: Each of Anderson’s films takes place in a perfectly styled world, with characters who are so impeccably dressed and inhabit spaces that complement their personalities and desires so well that it’s like a fashion editorial—with a compelling plot no less—come to life.

The colors are singularly odd; the silhouettes are crisp; and the tiny details, be it the bobby pins that hold back Margot Tenenbaum’s hair or the red knit caps worn by Team Zissou, make each character feel precisely quirky. But for all the love that fashion folks have for the director, his involvement in the fashion world at large is relatively limited. He rarely attends fashion shows or parties, and he often collaborates by making short films rather than actual products.

Today, Anderson’s latest fashion-world partnership was unveiled: a holiday film made for H&M. Set on a train—cue The Darjeeling Limited callbacks—the piece stars Adrien Brody as a conductor determined to make a much-delayed trip as pleasant as possible for passengers.

As with all other Anderson projects, this one doesn’t lack for panache or cleverness. The full film is now playing on H&M’s website, but you can get a special behind-the-scenes look above.

Should one Anderson fashion film not suffice, walk down memory lane to see the rest of his crossovers, here.
