Kebabs, butterflies and pearly queens: the dawn of 2017 – in pictures

24 photographers who met at art school in London decided to document each New Year’s Day for 24 years, resulting in a poignant and serendipitous series of images as their lives take different paths. They began in 2004 – and here is some of their work from 2017 courtesy of the Guardian.

Each of the photographers introduces their images, beginning with Claudia Leisinger: ‘Everything flows: an old forest into the modern city, the wild into the controlled. Nothing is truly separated and yet we insist on constructed borders – like the end of one year and the beginning of the next.’

The 24:2017 images are on display at Soho Square, London, until 17 March.
